Why AI Sometimes Drifts Away From What You Asked
If AI leaves out a requirement or goes in the wrong direction, name the specific miss. Then check the instructions and information behind it.

Quick Answer
When AI drifts from your instructions, compare the answer with the request and identify the exact failure. Check for conflicting requirements, missing inputs, and an unclear output format. Give targeted feedback or restate the current task. Clearer instructions can help, but they do not guarantee an accurate or compliant answer.
When ChatGPT or another AI is not following your instructions, first identify what it missed. Then check whether the requirement was explicit, whether the necessary information was available, and whether another instruction contradicted it.
A clearer prompt can help, but it cannot guarantee obedience or factual correctness. Model behavior, tool access, supplied information, and the complexity of the task all affect the answer.
Check for conflicting requirements
“Explain all the details in 50 words” may ask for more than the format allows. “Use only my data and fill in missing figures” invites a conflict unless you explain how missing values should be handled.
Choose which requirement controls the answer. For example: “Stay under 200 words. Cover the three decisions only. Flag any detail that needs a separate explanation.”
Make essential instructions visible
If a requirement is important, say it directly. “Do not invent dates” is clearer than assuming the AI will recognize that your notes contain none.
Keep the request focused. A long instruction containing unrelated jobs can make it difficult to judge which part failed. Split distinct tasks when that makes the work easier to review.
Check the inputs
A prompt may refer to a file that was not attached, a previous conversation that is unavailable, or a current fact the tool cannot retrieve. Confirm what the receiving AI actually has.
If the source lacks a fact, ask the AI to mark it unknown. More confident wording cannot replace missing evidence.
Define the output
Tell the AI what belongs in the answer and how to structure it. For a task list, specify fields such as task, owner if stated, deadline if stated, and next action. For a draft, explain the audience and required message.
Give targeted feedback
You omitted [requirement]. Revise the answer to include it, using only [available information]. Keep [useful part] unchanged. Flag anything you cannot determine.
This is an illustrative follow-up. Replace the brackets with the specific failure. Do not add “try harder” when you can name the missed condition.
Repair the prompt when the same problem repeats
Use “Improve a Prompt” in The Personal Prompt Builder™ to rewrite the request and review its “What I improved” summary. If a finished prompt only needs an adjustment, use “Refine”. See how to refine an AI prompt while preserving the useful details.
Copy the revised instructions into your chosen AI and test the same task again. Check both compliance and factual accuracy. A response that follows the requested format can still contain mistakes.

Example: The AI Added a Deadline You Never Supplied
You asked for an action list from meeting notes. The answer has the requested table, but it invents Friday deadlines for several tasks. The problem is the unsupported dates, not the table itself.
Revise the action list using only the meeting notes below. Keep the task, owner, deadline, and next-action columns. Include an owner or deadline only when the notes state one. Otherwise write “Not specified”. Remove the unsupported Friday dates. List any clarification questions after the table.
This is a manually written correction example, not a recorded app result. Include the relevant notes when you use it. After the revision, compare each owner and date with those notes. A neatly formatted answer still needs checking.
When a Fresh Conversation May Help
If a conversation has moved through several unrelated jobs and revisions, it may be easier to state the current task in a fresh conversation. Include the facts, source material, and constraints the new conversation needs. Do not assume it will have all the details from another chat.
Starting again is optional. A targeted correction in the current chat may be enough when the missed condition is clear. Choose the approach that makes the instructions easier for you to review.
Your Before-Retry Checklist
- Can you point to the exact missed requirement?
- Are any instructions asking for incompatible results?
- Has the receiving AI been given the necessary material?
- Have you explained how to handle missing facts?
- Can you verify the next answer against the source?

Correct the Missed Requirement
Name the problem, supply the facts, and check the revision. A specific correction gives you a clearer next step than another request to “do better”.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is ChatGPT not following my instructions?
Possible causes include an ambiguous request, conflicting requirements, missing information, and limits of the model or available tools. Identify what it missed before deciding how to correct it.
Should I repeat the whole prompt?
If one condition was missed, name it and request a focused revision. If the task has become unclear, restate the current goal, source material, constraints, and output format.
Will a better prompt stop AI from making things up?
No prompt guarantees factual accuracy. Ask the AI to flag missing facts, then verify the answer against reliable source material.
When should I use the builder’s “Improve a Prompt” feature?
Use it when an existing request needs a broader rewrite. Review the revised prompt and its “What I improved” summary before copying it into your chosen AI tool.
